K. Smart Associates Limited has over 30 years of experience providing a comprehensive range of services to our clients in the design, construction, rehabilitation and inspection of bridge structures throughout Ontario.
We have provided design and construction supervision for multiple types of new and existing bridge structures including but not limited to concrete culverts, poured in place rigid frame bridges, composite steel beam bridges, precast and poured in place girder bridges, timber bridges and steel truss bridges.
The firm has attended to the inspection and preparation of inspection reports in accordance with the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual (OSIM), structural evaluation of existing bridges in accordance with the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code (OHBDC) and the current Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA-S6), and follow-up recommendations for rehabilitation of hundreds of bridges.
In addition to our inspection and evaluation services we can also provide short term and long term monitoring of the bridge utilizing long base strain gauges and extensometer sensors. The sensors collect real time bridge performance data that is recorded for future analysis. Analysis of the data has many useful applications. For example it can be used to detect heavily loaded vehicles which may be causing damage to the bridge. The data may also provide an indication of how the bridge is performing as it ages. This gives the owner insight into the bridges behaviour, structural condition and allows the owner to plan for remediation or replacement of the bridge in the future.
